CNC Stomp Pad 7 - Part Grinding - CNC Video Tutorial - CNC Videos

Video Info:
When you cut something out with a plasma cutter there is slag left over you have to remove. This slag is officially called "dross" when it come to plasma cutting. In this video we rough grind the cnc stomp pad to remove the dross. I call it rough grind because later we will use a DA Sander to smooth it all out.

Video Transcript:

Next thing we will do is going into the grinding of the stomp pad. Usually I start out with a rough grind and I’ll use some sort of grinder usually with a bigger pad. It will be a pretty aggressive sanding disc that I'll have on there. Really what I'm trying to do, if this was mild steel, I’m trying to knockoff the slag and sharper those edges a little bit. With aluminum and if you've ever ground on aluminum, you will know this to be true; it also melts and will work its way into that grinding pad or disk. Therefore, I'm not pushing too hard here and really I am just trying to knock down all those high spots. You’ll notice, the grind marks are also sticking into that Stomp Pad, which we are going to want to do something about a little bit later. We will probably go over those with a DA Sander. The sander will give it more of a mat finish rather than a grinder finish.  Watch me work around, there are a lot of angles on this so I have to get that grinding disc in and of the appropriate areas and do some finagling. I don't really have in my shop, a very good grinder bench and so a lot of times a quick part like this I throw on the floor and grind it so I don't have slag flying around the shop. So that was the backside and front side is going to be a heck of a lot quicker and you don't have dross on this side. Dross really only shows up on the rear side. I’m going through and roughing up the surface and taking out any large scratches. This was just some scrap aluminum that I had lying around. There it is after I'm done with the grinding. We will go to the finish grind next. If you have any questions go to www.cncinformation.com
