CNC Stomp Pad 1 - CNC Project Intro - CNC Video Tutorial - CNC Videos

Video Info:
CNC Project that is shot in a tutorial sequence. It goes from the Design, CAD, CAM, Control, CNC Plasma Cutting and then final assembly. Check out this CNC How-To.

Video Transcript:
Hello I’m Ivan Irons from www.cncinformation.com and today we are going to do a project called CNC stomp pad. If you don’t know what it is, that’s fine, we will get to that. You see that I've have it subtitled Led Zeppelin Stomp which I will also explain.

First, what is a stop pad? A stomp pad is a piece of snowboard gear that mounts to your snowboard so when you are at the bottom of the hill and your skating around from run to run or the lodge to the lift, it gives you grip on your snow board so your boots don't slip as you can imagine the snow will make that snowboard pretty slick. Basically, you mount this on your snowboard as a landing place for your rear leg.

Why do this project? One of my buddies got a new snowboard this year and every time you do that you need a new stomp pad to go on it and he didn’t want something just like everyone else or something commercial off-the-shelf.  He really likes Led Zeppelin so the idea was born to do a Led Zeppelin style stomp pad for his new snowboard.

This is really a CNC project that involves plasma cutting. I also have it sub labeled there as CNC art. With CNC you can make parts or you can make artwork, which are one off unique items but you CNC to do them. This falls into that category.

Some of those projects steps that were to go through first are to use Adobe Illustrator to create the artwork file and rough out our design. Then we are going to bring that over into Rhino 3-D to do the CAD work and then the down into Sheetcam to do the CAM work and machining parameters.

Then we are going to go out to the CNC Plasma cutter cut the piece out. We are actually going to do it out of aluminum, probably eighth inch thick, or something near that. We want to keep that stomp pad relatively light we don't want to add a whole bunch a weight to the snowboard. Then we are going to grind the slag off. If you have ever done a CNC Plasma project you will understand that. Also we will go over it with the DA Sander take off the scratches and also create a matte finish.

We will then drill some holes and assemble some spikes. Those spikes are going to be our friction surface. There are a number of stomp pads on the market that use spikes so we thought that was actually a good idea. The final mounting will come last and that will be interesting. We don’t exactly know what adhesive to go with so we will do sort of an experiment. Let's get started! It is the Led Zeppelin stomp pad projects on CNCInformation.com.
