I'm basicly new to CNC as to building these type machines. Thanks to Ivan he got me in the right direction to start. Being like most folks building there first machine I chose to be real cheep and learn from my mistakes. One thing I'd like to say is get a note book and record your build and make drawing and play with the parts. I'm useing Ivans roller assyemblies except I chose to use nylon bearings wich are free to me, or my cost wouold be .99 cents the rods or slides are from jackson door closers (scraped out) small drops of 1-inch Lexan and some cut off door push rails. so you see I'm really scraping this together LOL. heres a pic of the Y table and works very smooth, I plan to add one more roller on each side. This machine will be decated to makeing circutboards and what nots.

Thank you Ivan. here some pics of the lower table and the Y table sitting on top. all the parts are just fitted and not fastened yet so you see how good the fitting work is. the 3 little steppers are the power heads for the movements hope there strong enought.

Update- as the learning curve go's ..... My little stepper motors are only 9oz , very light weight. i googoled them and found some interesting info. When using a geared reducer it will increase the power output many times. the reason for this is the stepper can run at a higher speed so the tork and amps falling the motors operational limits. So I had some Mini Motors with reducers on them 40-1 ratio and now machining the couplers to fit the little steppers. The fit is great to the end caps so it will make a nice package. I need 1 more so I'll shop around to some of my suppliers and see if I can pick up a burnt out one for the gear assembly. heres a photo of what I'm doing.

What is that slide piece made out of? Acrylic?

Thats 1in laminated bullet restant Lexan , we had some drops left over from work. if Ican't make the machine work then I'll use it for bullet practice lol JK I have another little machine i'm working on too will post that soon.

Using a tangent drive (threaded rod) can or will cause some problem when passing the off center (centerforce of bit ).
Direct drive of one or more bearing should not have as much of a problem if there is no backlash in the drive. A dc motor or steper (1/4 step) with a low backlash gear reducer or steper with microsteping and direct drive should work.


The amount of force /power required to drive the carage is related to the amount of out of cut.
The Astrosyn 17PY-Q202-03 400 step motor has 9 in oz of holding torque. Assuming 33% of that torque is a safety limit or 3 in oz. Using a 1" diam (0.5 radius drive) with a 10:1 reduction yield 60 in oz. Almost 4 lb of drive.
This is the motors I'm useing but with the 40-1 ratios so you can see the reduction increases the drive power. If you look at the gear reducers, I removed the armature and the feild and used the end cap to put the stepper motor in. I removed the armature shaft by pressing it out of the armature and remachineing it to be the coulpler to the gear. These will be on a machene that makes square holes in 1/4 inch glass and later on another glass machine I'm designing. Still working on the first project called 0$.

In an earlier post i was talking about the steppers running at a higher speed. the stepper has a threshold at mid speed called the corner stone. When this coenerstone is passed the tourque is geiing minamal and at hiher speeed there is none and the motor will over heat. steppers are designed to run at low speeds this is where the tourque (power comes from). I learned this from the PDF file at Gecko drives , very interesting.
