Some CNC Plasma Cutter Questions From a Member 4 Months, 1 Week ago
Hello All,

Here are some questions I got in an email from a Member. I thought I would share.

1. Do I need the z-axis for sheet cutting or it is just used when the VAC
system is set?

The z-axis on a plasma is to move the torch within cutting distance of the sheet. You usually want to be within a millimeter or two of the sheet while cutting. metal warps while heated, so you need to have the capability to move the head up and down.

2. In the first phase of the project w/o VAC system, is the quality of
cutting acceptable?

You don't really need a vacuum system at all with plasma cutting. It creates a lot of dust and dirt when it cuts though. I usually open a door and turn on a fan to blow the smoke out. The quality of the cut is not affected by having a vacuum or not.

3. Does the so called High Definition plasma cutting means using the VAC
or it involves other optional system added to the torch?

High Definition plasma is a type of plasma cutting that creates a finer detail of cut then regular definition plasma. It doesn't really have any thing to do with a Vacuum system. The torch head is slightly different, with different consumables. I am no expert on the subject, but I think Hi Def was developed to combat laser cutting and their accuracy.

4. Is some plan and photo of your plasma cutter available on the website?

I don't have any plans on the site yet. I am working on it. You can go to my profile and have a look at my plasma cutter if you want. I will add some more photos in the forums soon of my setup.

Have a good one,
Ivan
