Hi, I just joined, and I want to say...my name is eddie and I'm a cnc newbie (thanks to Ivan and youtube).
I hope to learn CNC machining, I think it's fascinating specially when there are people like Ivan and others willing to show, if not inspire one through videos. Watching the youtubes videos on other machine tools and projects is cool. specially the little V-8 engine block machining.
Now for the good news!
There was a local research and developement firm that were closing it's doors but opened them for the public to sell it's goods, as sur plus, one weekend and look at what i found

Ok, I am not able to get pics to the size I can fit on here but if you go to this link on ebay; http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&rd=1&item=280189755004&ssPageName=STRK:MEWA:IT&ih=018 or better yet go to eBay.com and look up IDC Heavy Duty XYZ stage Industrial devices corp LOOK, you'll see something similar to what i have. I bought this similar machine for $150.00. Mine has one stepper motor on the Z, the guy who sold it to me said that the controller for this machine burnt out so they stored the machine away because. It was to expensive to replace at the time, they had it for 7 years before the controller went (so I guess no warranty) but they picked it for parts to use on other machines, in which the parts were being sold at other tables..and they let them go for free. This thing is Beefy...both the X and Y table at the base is wider than my hand is long from the wrist to top of middle finger, the trucks are beefy the dimensions are 26x26x13 (to end of steppers which I put back on from the parts box they gave me) the XY tables are 7.5 inches wide. I am begining to suspect that this machine was also modified with parts from other machines....but so far everything still seems tight, sturdy and smooth...when I moved the tables by hand. Assuming you all looked it up, do you think this would make a good cnc machine? I want to cut ridgid foam, delrin and machinable wax, maybe some aluminum on it. I purchased a Newport breadboard table 36 x 60 for a steal the following day. I would like to mount this machine onto the bread board table (which has 3/8 inch threaded holes throughout the whole tables, literally every inch). Now, the one motor that came with it (on the Z axis) has this for info: Slo-sych motor, Type M062-LS09, Amps 4.7, Step/Rev 200rpm. I don't think I know what this means, other than the RPm's. would this be a good motor to keep [on the Z axis] or should I replace it? it seems small compared to the whole machine. I am also a bit apprehensive about the term "slo" in slo-synch. I am going to try and take pics to fit on here tongiht. If all goes well, specially by your suggestions, this will be my First CNC BUILD and I'll record it by posting pics on here

The unit looks good. I'm not sure how beefy it is but looks good. great to see you got some spare parts from the bin. Keep us up to date on what you build from it. I just purchased a metal Lathe today to move forward on my project, It should be here in a few days. To clear up the beefy statement, the deflection when working off center creates vibration in the longitudinal movement and down force. so bolting it to something real solid is a must (heavy). I was curious how much it weights? When taking a picture of things i usually put a scale in the photo next to the place I want to get feed back on and help other people understand. good luck can't wait to see what you come up with. I'm still looking for a good spindle motor About 3 inches in diameter if you know where one might be. Mike

Hey thanks for the reply, I am putting it on the back burner 'til summer vacation (may 22) because of classes, what with finals coming up i need to concentrate on my studies (you all understand how it goes ). But yeah, i didn't think the machine I have would be as big (beefy) as it is, hell i built a table to accomodate its size of 13"x26"x26" and it seems to dwarf the table. I weighed it at work on a large scale and it weighed in at what a seig 7x12 lathe weighs 76 lbs, and this machine being made of black anodized aluminum, sans the parts, motors and sensors and the like...maybe it's the size of the trucks that add to the weight, also. . But hey I welcome any suggestions advise inputs and what ever this forum has to offer, thanks. I'll try to load pics again, shrink and all to fit this site.

As for the spindle motor, i do have two servo motors that came off a beta switching machine, they have encoders on the ends...i am not sure you can use these for spindle motors (still learning stuff like this). They are of the same make and exact designs to each other except one of them is quite possibly 3" inshes in dia. and the other is 5" to 8" in dia. This gives me an Idea, I'll post some pics of my dumpster diving find(s)and sur plus buys and maybe make a thread on this subject and record them; from finds and buys to utilization as other life in a home made machine. Cool. I think I'd do that...any way as i said they are sevro motors. at one point i wanted to build a gantry mill but the task was daunting, I don't have room for such a machine, and they were to good to pass up at $85 for both...but now I haven't a use for them (they're too big for what i need...for now) and am willing to part with them...no money, maybe bartering system but of something of equal quality [value]. i'll post pics tonight? for anyone else who would be interested.

Not a bad little set up. I am also fairly new to cnc routing and this is similar to what I am doing hope to see some more.
