Where do I start? 8 Months, 1 Week ago
I work in a small machine shop that has just a couple of manual lathes, and milling machines. They want to purchase a small cnc machine so we won't have to send some of our items out. How do I start the whole process? What are the costs of a small machine? Do I need to go to school? Any info will help.
Thanks

Hello Searob!

In order to run a cnc machine you need to have some basic computer knowledge.
A cad program is required for designing and a cam program for setting parameters
for your cnc machine.
I think that a basic cam program is included when you buy a cnc machine.
It would be very helpful if you could watch the CNC Basics E-Course Videos at the main page.

Prices will vary, I would look at a good used machine if possible. CAD software is handy but not a must. CAM software is also handy but not a must if you have good math capapbilities. I program some really big complicated parts with a calculator pencil and sctratch pad on a daily basis. We have a HAAS mill, and the owners manual has enough information in it and example programs to teach you to run the machine effectively. I taught myself with just such a manual.
