For machine shops wishing to make their first cost-effective first step into CNC prismatic machining, a machine tool company is offering a 3HP/4,200 rev/min milling machine from GBP 10,000
XYZ Machine Tools has launched for machine shops what it said is by far the most cost-effective ‘first step’ into CNC prismatic machining. Prices begin at GBP 10,000 (+VAT) for the XYZ ProtoTRAK EMX eMill It is a flexible and easy to use turret mill that can be operated in either manual/DRO or CNC mode.
The 3HP/4,200 rev/min XYZ ProtoTRAK EMX eMill has X- and Y-axis travels of 762mm and 356mm and a 1270mm x 254mm table.
It is one of three new ProtoTRAK turret millers equipped as standard with the EMX control.
The intermediate model is the 3HP/4,200 rev/min ProtoTRAK EMX 2000, which also has X- and Y-axis travels of 762mm and 356mm and a 1270mm x 254mm table.
Top of the range is the 5HP/3,600 rev/min XYZ ProtoTRAK EMX 3000.
This machine has X- and Y-axis travels of 813mm and 432mm and a 1371mm x 305 mm table.
* A variable speed head.
* Meehanite cast iron ribbed construction.
* Built and guarded to comply fully with CE regulations.
When working manually in DRO mode, the servomotors do most of the work when the operator presses the POWER FEED and JOG buttons.
When manual machining is preferred, precision ballscrews provide a smooth, positive response to turning of the X- and Y-axis mechanical handwheels.
XYZ said to manufacturingtalk.com that this feature allows the user to ‘feel’ the cutting process.
* Quick and easy programming - first-time CNC users will find programming the EMX t2-axis control quick and easy, because it involves simple selections and answering prompts in plain English.
Unlike conventional controls, the user need only define the part geometry because the control defines the tool path.
XYZ said that reassurance is always to hand for the inexperienced user as pressing the LOOK key brings up a colour graphic of what has been programmed so far.
In fact, with CNC now this easy to program and use, it won’t be long before DROs become obsolete, said XYZ.
Every aspect of this low-cost CNC is dedicated to reducing the time spent setting-up, which for businesses specialising in prototype, maintenance and repair, and small batch work is where the major part of the labour cost is incurred.
An integral ‘flash drive’ can save hundreds of machining programs, said XYZ.
A a USB port is available to plug in a storage device for backing up programs and moving programs between the machine control and off-line computers.
* Retrofit the EMX - the EMX control is also available separately as a retrofit option, providing all the features needed in a low-cost CNC while leaving out the features that make other CNCs more complicated - and more expensive, said XYZ.
Retrofitting to an existing turret mill typically can be completed within a couple of days, either by a specialist retrofitter or on a DIY basis.
The retrofit kit includes everything: from motors, ballscrews and CNC right down to cable ties and comprehensive installation instructions.
It is supplied with full warranty protection and free access to XYZ Machine Tools’ technical support department based at the Burlescombe, Devon headquarters in the UK. Request a free brochure from XYZ Machine Tools….
