Turning Balls on a Lathe

Lathe work is so fun and exciting!  If you’re looking for a new woodworking project, consider turning some balls.  It’s fun to do and you can thoroughly entertain your children with this project.

There are lots of things that you can do with turned balls.  You can create decorative accents for vases, mobiles, a marble set for the kids, use them to create stems on handmade wineglasses, cabinet and drawer knobs, a working universe model, or create a handmade wine bottle stopper; the possibilities are really endless!  Just use your imagination and think of all the crafty things you can do with wooden balls.

First you need to choose the type of wood that you will use.  Basically, the harder the wood, the less indention you will see from the wood turning lathe attachment.  The wood is held in place by a circular mechanism, so sometimes you will get a circular indention on one or both ends of the ball.  Some lathe attachments don’t mark up the balls as much as others, but really it depends on the type of wood that you use.

Start off with a center mounted block of wood.  Use a gouge tool to get started and skew chisel to turn your block into a smooth cylinder.  Be especially careful with the skew chisel, as it is considered to be very dangerous.  If this is your first time using one, go very slowly and wear protective clothing and face protection.  Skew chisels can easily dig into the wood and spring from your hand.  Review the proper techniques for using a skew chisel before you begin.  Practice before you turn on the lathe.  The skew chisel should be very sharp and produce a long thin ribbon of wood when you’re doing it correctly.  You may have to attempt to create your cylinder several times until you really get the hang of the skew chisel.

Use a caliper to measure the diameter of the cylinder, making sure that it is the same all the way around.   Then turn the caliper ninety degrees and mark the cylinder for the width of the ball making sure that it is exactly the same as the diameter.  Measure for the center of the wood section that is to become your ball.  Mark it with a pencil all the way around.

Measure half-way between the outside boundary marks and your center line.  Use the pencil to mark this point so that the center of the cylinder is now divided into three sections.  Use a gouge tool to cut from these new lines down to the boundaries, sloping out at forty-five degrees.  Continue to work your way down so that the cylinder becomes more and more like a ball trapped between two blocks.  You may need to remark your center line at this point.

Cut the ball loose and use a ball drive to hold the ball steady.  Mount it with the center line vertical.  Work your way around smoothing as you go.  You can look for shadows to spot areas that aren’t perfectly round yet.  Take the ball off, rotate it so that the center line is horizontal, and repeat the smoothing process.  Use fine grit sandpaper, rotating the ball ninety degrees again and again until the ball is smooth.

This technique is used for making balls.  You can use the cylinder technique to create cylinders, <a rel=”nofollow” onclick=”javascript:_gaq.push(['_trackPageview', '/outgoing/article_exit_link']);” href=”http://www.goodwoodinc.com/”title=”Dowel”>dowel</a> rods, or dowels of custom diameter.  Remember to be safe!

Wire EDM Services

Wire EDM services are not exactly new technology. The concept was originally discovered in the 1770′s by an English Scientist. It was not until the 1970′s that EDM was commercially developed, and in the 1980′s began to be distributed and utilized through the world of machine shops.

Wire EDM (Electrical Discharge Machining) is an electro thermal production process that removes metal in a very precise manner by harnessing the heat of an electrical spark. Precision wire (typically brass) is fed continuously from a spool through precision diamond guides, one above and one below the work piece. As the wire is fed it is energized with electricity. The work piece to be machined, which must be a conductive material, is grounded. The EDM machine moves the wire (or the table holding the work piece) in the path that is to be cut. As the wire nearly touches the work piece, sparks begin to jump between the wire and work piece in an extremely fast, very controlled manner. The sparks are microscopic and each spark removes a very microscopic piece of material. Millions of sparks per second are constantly removing material so that the wire appears to be cutting through the work piece material, leaving a gap or cut path behind it slightly larger than the wire and in whatever path the wire is programmed to move through the work piece material. Dielectric water is fed constantly over the wire and into the gap which cools and flushes out the microscopic melted particles. The used wire, which appears microscopically pitted, is taken up on a spool or chopped into short pieces to be sold to a metal recycling facility.

The most common wire size used in EDM is.010″ diameter. The sparks themselves actually take up space, causing the curf or cut of the wire to be larger than the wire itself. A.010″ diameter wire might leave a cut anywhere from.0106 to.014 wide, depending on the amount of energy used to make the cut. The more energy used to make the cut, the faster the wire travels, and the less precise the cut path is.

Companies offering wire EDM services have a variety of equipment and options to choose from. Mitsubishi, Agie, Charmilles, and Sodik are all major brands of wire EDM machines. Many of these machines will run multiple wire sizes ranging from.0012″ diameter to.012″ diameter. The smaller wire sizes allow companies to do micro machining and very small and complex parts. Wire EDM is capable of producing a wide range of surface finishes. At the rough end of the scale the finishes start around 250 Ra microinch ( &mu;” ) and by use of multiple trim passes can go down to 4 Ra microinch ( &mu;” ). Many EDM machines can tilt the wire, allowing them to make parts that have a tapered shape. Wire EDM machines are also capable of cutting and threading the wire automatically, allowing the machines to be programmed to make multiple cuts in a part without operator intervention. A hollow stream of water is shot at high pressure from the top wire guide to the bottom, and the wire is fed down through this stream until the rollers in the bottom head pick up the wire and beginning pulling it. With all of these automatic features built into the machines, companies offering wire EDM services often run their machines at night unattended on long cuts.

Many industries benefit from wire EDM services. The medical and electronics industries both often have applications for micro wire EDM services. EDM machines are often used in the production of extrusion dies, punch dies, and even plastic injection mold work. The automotive, aerospace, defense, textiles, and many other industries all use parts that must be built on wire EDM machines. Wire EDM today has truly become a main stream production process.

Buying round grill grates?

I have a large tank. It is heavy plate tank from an 80 gallon air compressor. I’m wanting to convert it into a large upright gas smoker. I am wanting to set it up so I can install wire grates every three inches for items such as pork chops and ribs then remove grates for larger items. I need to know of a supplier that sells round grill grates by diameter. Replacement Weber grill grates is all I’ve found so far doing google searches. I’m looking for a company that sells a selection of sizes. I’ve just purchased the tank and havn’t touched it with the plasma cutter yet to know the inside diameter of the tank.
Thanks for your help!
